The Medical Council on Alcohol is not primarily a campaigning organisation but we do support other organisations active in the public health and policy spheres to reduce alcohol-related harm.

The MCA board members have been involved in the creation of a number of guidelines, including NICE guidelines.

The MCA is a member of the AHA (Alcohol Health Alliance), with whom we work on a number of alcohol related issues, particularly the promotion of minimum unit price policy.

Many MCA members are involved in the development of clinical guidelines in the alcohol field, including NICE Quality Standards and the UK Alcohol Treatment Clinical Guidelines.

There is an urgent need for a health system response to addressing alcohol-related health harms.

The Medical Council on Alcohol, together with health professionals and other experts working in the alcohol and health fields, are calling for a National Strategy focusing on the treatment and secondary prevention of alcohol dependence, and alcohol-related harm, in clinical populations across the health system. This includes urgent actions across and at all levels of the health services which will result in long needed improvements in the care of this much neglected group of people.
